If you’re a woman writer of colour longing for space to hear yourself again, join us for a restorative week in Barbados. You’ll return home with a deeper connection to your voice, a gentler writing rhythm, and the support of a creative community that reminds you your words matter.

The morning sun peeks over the horizon, casting a golden glow across the hillside. You wake gently, feeling the cool, salt-tinged air on your skin as you step outside. The path to the deck winds through tropical greenery, each step slowing your breath. When you reach the open-air space, the sea greets you with its steady rhythm. A heartbeat beneath your feet.

Notebook in hand, you settle into the hush of morning. The waves keep time as you begin your writing practice, guided by breath, reflection, and the quiet call of the page. Words come softly at first, then with ease, as if the ocean itself were whispering them into being. This is your sacred hour — a meeting between you, the page, and what’s been waiting to be written.

Later, as the sun climbs higher, you gather with fellow writers. There is laughter, ease, and the unmistakable comfort of being among kindred spirits. Stories spill between you, shared insights, small revelations, gentle nods of recognition.

You feel restored. Your creativity is no longer something to chase, but something that’s come home. As dusk falls and the stars scatter across the sky, you sense a shift: the beginnings of a new chapter, one marked by clarity, connection, and creative courage.

Every writer arrives for her own reasons — to rest, to return to herself, to remember what the page has been waiting to tell her. This retreat is an invitation to do all three.

Who This Retreat Is For

This retreat is for the writer, emerging writer, or the woman who has been quietly carrying stories for years who longs to slow down, listen inward, and reconnect with their creative rhythm. It’s for those who sense there’s more waiting beneath the surface: a truer voice, a deeper calm, a story ready to be told.

If this sounds like you, Between Sea and Story was created with you in mind.

You’ll feel at home here if you…

  • Crave stillness and spaciousness to write without pressure or expectation.
  • Want to nurture your creative spirit as much as your craft, remembering that rest, reflection, and joy are part of the process.
  • Are drawn to meaningful connection, where conversation, laughter, and community coexist with solitude.
  • Are ready to release self-doubt and make room the version of yourself that already knows how to write, create, and begin again.
  • Feel called to the Caribbean, to the rhythm of the sea and a place that mirrors your own expansiveness.

This retreat is especially for writers who are seeking more than pages.
They’re seeking presence.

I am ready to release self-doubt

Nourishment for Body and Story

Each meal offers a moment of connection — to the island, to one another, and to your own creative rhythm.

Breakfast is served on the open-air terrace, the Atlantic stretching endlessly before you. The sound of waves and the morning breeze set a gentle rhythm as you begin your day with fresh local fruit, farm eggs, artisanal breads, and bush tea — the traditional herbal infusion of the island. It’s an unhurried meal, a quiet invitation to settle into the island’s pace.

Lunch takes you beyond the hotel grounds, offering a taste of the island through the eyes — and hands — of its people. From seaside cafés to hidden village spots, you’ll share meals loved by locals and discover how each dish tells a story of resilience, community, and creativity.

Evenings draw you back to the terrace for a three-course al fresco dinner beneath the stars. The menu celebrates the vibrant produce and fresh catch that Barbados is known for — think green banana soft-shell tacos, spiced fish cutters, and desserts that feature the sweetness of tropical fruit in season. Conversations linger, laughter carries, and the day closes with a shared sense of gratitude.

Every dish is crafted with care and curiosity, using locally sourced ingredients and honouring a range of dietary needs — from vegan and vegetarian to gluten-free and dairy-free.

Here, food is more than a meal; it’s a dialogue with the island — a reminder that creativity, like good cooking, begins with presence and love.

The Journey

Day 1 — Begin Again

You arrive in Bathsheba, welcomed by the sea’s steady breath and the soft green hush of the hillside. This is your invitation to exhale. Together, we’ll gather for orientation, setting intentions, grounding in community, and establishing the agreements that will hold our shared space. Through a gentle meditation and opening circle, you’ll begin crafting the first page of your retreat story, honouring what you’re leaving behind and what you’re stepping into. This day invites you to loosen your grip on old patterns and trust that something new is waiting to unfold.

Day 2 — Listening Inward

At sunrise, silence and salt air will guide you on a nature walk before breakfast. An opening into stillness. Our Rise & Write session introduces writing as a morning ritual, a way of listening to what’s already stirring within. Through guided exercises and partner sharing, you’ll explore your creative identity and map your inner landscape. Using a memoir lens, you’ll meet your inner critic with curiosity, not judgment, and write toward the writer you are becoming. Self-directed writing time during the day is an open field for your truth to surface.

Day 3 — Sitting in the Fire

This is the day of courage. Through journaling and guided reflection, you’ll confront the fears and perfectionism that have long shaped your writing life. Craft play through a speculative lens invites you to imagine a world where fear has no power; where your stories move freely. As evening falls, we’ll gather at the fire pit under the sky, releasing what no longer serves through a symbolic burning. This is where transformation begins: in the willingness to face the heat and still write through it.

Day 4 — Let the Island Teach You

Today, the island becomes your classroom. You’ll wander through rare book libraries, taste the food locals love, and let the forest breathe with you. Through sensory note-taking and quiet attention, you’ll collect the textures, sounds, and stories that live in this place. This is a day of absorption, an invitation to learn from the island’s rhythm. To let her teach you how to move slowly, listen deeply, and write from presence.

Day 5 — Composing a Life

After days of opening and release, you’ll turn towards integration, shaping a practice that can hold you long after you leave. Using poetry as your guide, you’ll explore what discipline, devotion, and rest look like in your creative life. Time by the sea will soften your thinking; new rituals will emerge. You’ll leave this day with clarity about how to weave your writing into daily life — a rhythm that sustains the writer you are becoming.

Day 6 — Writing in Community

The writing life thrives in connection. Over lunch with a local writer, you’ll glimpse what creative courage looks like close to home. Through reflection and letter writing, you’ll gather gratitude, insight, and companionship. Evening may bring spontaneous readings — laughter, softness, recognition. This day reminds you that writing is not a solitary act; it’s a conversation, a constellation of voices you now belong to.

Day 7 — Carrying the Flame

Your final sunrise Rise & Write is both an ending and a beginning. You’ll reflect on the story that’s unfolded — what you’ve released, what’s taken root, and what you’ll carry home. In our closing circle, you’ll write your own epilogue: a promise to yourself, a reminder that this light — your writer self — continues to burn beyond the retreat. You’ll leave grounded, grateful, and ready to meet the page anew.

You had me at salt air and stillness.

This retreat is for you if …

You long to be witnessed not just as a writer, but as your whole, authentic self.

In a safe and affirming circle, you’ll take creative risks and share your truth while stepping into your power so you can discover the freedom of being seen and held just as you are.

Your voice is ready to take up space and be heard.

By writing in your own rhythm and style, using empowerment exercises and self-affirmation practices, you will dive deep into self-discovery so you can feel deserving and capable of claiming your space.

You’re ready to say yes to your writing and watch that yes ripple through your life.

By practicing time-management strategies and prioritization techniques, you’ll carve out space for your writing life and witness what happens when you say yes to yourself — a choice that will ripple into every corner of your life.

You want to reconnect with your spark — to feel radiant, rested, and confident in your creative gifts.

Through practicing self-care, soulful self-renewal practices, and heart-centred expression, you will reignite your inner spark so you can confidently shine and feel deeply recognized in your creative gifts.

Sun, sea, and sentences?

Why Barbados

We asked her, and this is what she said ...

I have seen centuries pass over my shores — ships and storms, sorrow and song. Yet still, I rise each morning wrapped in gold light and sea breeze, waiting for the ones who come seeking truth through story. You, writer, are not the first to stand at my edge and wonder what the ocean remembers.

Here in Bathsheba, I show you my raw side — cliffs kissed by foam, rocks shaped by persistence, wind that hums like a hymn. This is where I keep my heart open to the Atlantic, to the motherland beyond the horizon. When you gaze east, you’re not just looking across the sea. You’re looking back through time, toward origin.

Come write with me. Let the salt remind you of survival, the sun of possibility. I will hold your story as I’ve held countless others — tenderly, fiercely, until you remember who you are and where you come from.

What our Scribe Tribe is saying

This retreat welcomes writers at every stage of their journey — those beginning, returning, or deepening their craft. From educators and artists to entrepreneurs and healers, each participant arrives with a story and a commitment to creative renewal.

“What I actually found here in the retreat is a sisterhood. I found a community of people who are all brilliant writers, but also just kind humans willing to listen to my work, but also to pour into me as a writer and as a person. And it’s something I didn’t even know I needed. Somehow this space has been a place where we can share our work and share our vulnerabilities. And I feel like I’m living with a tribe of friends.”

Jacquinn, journalist

“This retreat definitely created a more intimate relationship between me and my writing. We were a little disconnected at first. So it feels good to get back to her. And it’s made it so that we’re a little bit more committed to each other. I came here unsure and I’m most likely sure … most definitely sure about the relationship that I’ve created with my writing.”

K. Jay, UX writer

“Simone is magic and provides expert guidance. I was feeling both stuck and intimidated by my writing before the retreat. Having space and guidance to get a clear picture of my long-form writing project was huge in being able to move forward. I actually feel energized about the work and I am in a place now to make continuous advancements.”

Nicole, professor

“This retreat has given me the time and space to settle down and write. It’s something that I didn’t really realize before how much it was missing. It’s also providing a community of other like-minded writers. We sit together, we can discuss and get support. It’s something I think that was always missing in our community. And I’m extremely grateful to have found it here.”

The story in me is ready.

Meet Simone

I’m Simone, an author and writing practice coach born in Trinidad and Tobago. My story begins with the rhythm of the steelpan, a melody that first surrounded me in my mother’s womb as she performed during Carnival. That music — rooted, complex, alive — still shapes the rhythm of my writing today.

I grew up in a community where conversation, laughter, and resilience were shared freely, often led by women who taught me the quiet strength of showing up for one another. My mother, a beacon of service and reinvention, nurtured my love for words and my belief that writing could be both refuge and revelation.

When I moved to Canada in my early twenties, I carried those lessons with me. After my mother’s sudden passing, writing became my way back to myself. A practice that helped me hold grief and rediscover joy. Over time, that practice evolved into my life’s work: creating spaces for other writers, especially Black and Brown women, to do the same.

As the founder and host of Island Scribe’s writing retreats, I guide writers through immersive experiences that invite rest, reflection, and reconnection with voice. In Bathsheba, Barbados, our days move at the pace of the ocean, anchored by morning writing rituals, sensory exploration, and conversations that remind us why we write.

This retreat is an offering: a space to meet your writer self, to listen inward, and to begin again. Together, we’ll cultivate a practice rooted in joy, intention, and creative freedom.

Meet Danielle

Growing up in the vibrant islands of Trinidad and Tobago, my worldview was shaped by the rich cultural tapestry and inherent resilience of a small nation. Guided by my mother’s example of fearless reinvention, I learned early the power of curiosity, courage, and following one’s passions at any age.

After 25 years in the world of IT, I felt called to realign my life with creativity and meaning. That shift led me to writing retreats — a space where travel, transformation, and artistry converge.

As Director of Retreat Experience, I embrace the behind-the-scenes magic: ensuring the flow of logistics, nurturing community, managing finances, and capturing the retreat’s soul through storytelling, photos, and video. I am inspired daily by the Caribbean’s layered identity and the strength of women who gather to write, rest, and reimagine themselves.

Your Questions, Answered

If you’ve ever whispered, “I’m not really a writer,” this retreat is for you.

If your creative spark feels buried under work, family, or fatigue — this retreat is for you.

Our time together isn’t about perfection or productivity; it’s about presence. Over seven days, you’ll be guided through gentle practices designed to help you return to your voice, trust your rhythm, and reconnect to your creative joy. You don’t need to arrive with a project in hand — just a willingness to show up with an open heart and a notebook ready to receive.

We understand — it’s a significant investment. But we invite you to think of this as more than a retreat in a beautiful place. This is a creative intervention — a chance to reclaim your time, your rest, and your writing voice.

The transformation you’ll experience here will ripple far beyond the page. You’ll return home not only rested, but reconnected — with your creativity, your confidence, and a writing practice that feels sustainable and joyful.

After your deposit, a flexible two-payment plan is available. Many writers also fund their participation through professional-development grants, institutional support, or artist bursaries. If you need a referral or letter of support for your application, we’re happy to provide one.

(In short: don’t close the door on yourself before you’ve explored every way to step inside.)

Everything you need for a nourishing, fully supported creative retreat experience is included:

  • Daily breakfasts and dinners crafted with locally sourced ingredients.
  • Three local lunches, one at ECO Lodge and two during island excursions.

  • All bonuses listed above, including pre- and post-retreat calls, your personal clarity session, the private community group, and exclusive post-retreat access to the Afterglow Circle.

Part of the retreat’s magic lies in what unfolds once we arrive. The days follow a rhythm — sunrise writing circles, workshops, unstructured afternoons, island explorations, and sunset reflections — all designed to nourish both your craft and your spirit.
Simone teaches from her writing life itself, responding to the energy of the group and the inspiration of the island. You can trust that we’ve crafted a beautiful balance between guided sessions and restorative space to simply be.

Absolutely — this is, at its heart, a writing retreat.

Across our seven days together, you’ll have a minimum of 20 hours of dedicated writing time, built intentionally into the rhythm of the week. Mornings are often spent in guided circles that ease you into flow, while afternoons are reserved for deep, uninterrupted creative work — whether you’re developing a project, journaling, or exploring new ideas.

There’s space here for both structured guidance and solo immersion. Many writers leave with pages they didn’t know were waiting — and a renewed relationship to the practice itself.

Not at all. This retreat is yours to experience as you need.

Every element has been chosen with intention — to help you rest, reflect, and write — but you’ll always have agency over your time. If you need a morning to sleep in or an afternoon to walk the beach alone, do it. Sometimes the most profound writing happens when we pause.

No formal workshopping — and no pressure to share — will take place during this retreat.

Our focus is on process over product: reconnecting you to your creative flow through ritual, reflection, and gentle writing prompts. While there will be opportunities to share excerpts or discoveries within our writing circles, this is entirely optional.

Many writers describe it as a relief — a chance to write without the weight of critique, to rediscover the joy of the page purely for themselves.

That’s completely natural — and you won’t be a stranger for long.

Our retreats are intentionally small (usually 6–10 participants), creating an intimate environment where connection happens gently and naturally. Before we travel, you’ll be invited to a virtual meet-and-greet to get to know your fellow writers. Once on the island, shared meals, laughter, and creative breakthroughs will build community in ways that feel organic and safe.

Absolutely. Many of our participants identify as introverts, and the schedule is designed with that in mind.

You’ll have daily pockets of solitude — mornings to write, afternoons to rest or explore, evenings to retreat to your private room. Community is important here, but so is quiet. You’ll never be pressured to share beyond what feels right for you.

Yes. All participants are required to carry travel insurance that includes trip cancellation and medical coverage.

This protects you (and the group) in case of unexpected illness, weather delays, or other emergencies. Be sure to read your policy carefully, especially around coverage for pre-existing conditions and travel advisories. If you’re unsure where to start, our travel consultant partner, Wassermann Retreat Travel, can guide you to reputable providers.

Yes. ECO Lifestyle + Lodge takes pride in its farm-to-table restaurant, known for fresh, locally sourced ingredients and thoughtful menus that cater to a variety of dietary needs.

When you register, you’ll be asked to share any allergies or restrictions (gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, etc.), and the kitchen team will do their best to accommodate them. Meals are vibrant, flavourful, and nourishing — designed to support both your body and your creative energy throughout the week.

Think light, comfortable, and easy. Barbados is warm year-round, with cooling breezes in the evenings.

We’ll send you a detailed packing list closer to the retreat, but here’s the spirit of it: breathable clothing for the tropics, a light sweater or shawl for cooler nights, comfortable sandals and walking shoes, swimwear, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a rain jacket for sudden island showers.

And don’t forget your writing tools — your favourite notebook, pens, or laptop — whatever helps you feel most creative.

It’s understandable. We’ll be surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, which means we’ll occasionally share the space with island creatures: mosquitoes, rain flies, and the occasional beetle or cockroach.

ECO Lifestyle + Lodge takes great care in maintaining clean, eco-friendly rooms, provides mosquito nets for your bed, and offers natural repellents when needed. We’ll also share simple tips for comfort — like keeping balcony doors closed after dusk, using insect repellent, and wearing light sleepwear that covers arms and legs.

Remember: this is part of what makes the Caribbean ecosystem so alive. Most guests find that, within a day or two, they adjust easily — soothed by ocean breezes, ceiling fans, and the reminder that nature is part of the story here too.

Bathsheba is a quiet, close-knit village on Barbados’s east coast — known for its natural beauty and welcoming locals.

ECO Lifestyle + Lodge is a secure, eco-boutique property with attentive staff and gated grounds. We also arrange all group transportation for scheduled excursions and airport transfers, so you’ll never need to navigate logistics alone.

We’d love to hear from you.

Send your questions via our contact form, and someone from our team will be in touch. Whether you need help choosing the right room, confirming travel logistics, or just want to talk through whether this is the right time for you — we’re happy to chat.

Your story — and your creative wellbeing — matter to us.
